Probably one of the best named classic cocktail, the Corpse Reviver 2 supposedly does what it says – revive you when you might have had a few too many. I can neither confirm nor deny. That being said it is a great classic drink which is super easy to make!
Since there is a Corpse Reviver No 2, there has to be a No. 1. The original Corpse Reviver cocktail recipe is not as well known as its daughter, but it still is made. Instead of a gin based cocktail, the No 1 is a blend of cognac, sweet vermouth. This family of cocktails may or maybot be a hangover cure but it is super popular.
As these were created in the years before Prohibition in the early 1900s and maybe even pre 19th Century, not one really knows who invented them, but the Corpse Reviver No 2 popped Harry Craddock’s “Savoy Cocktail Book.” It was revived by cocktail enthusiasts and modern drinker and is now one of the iconic cocktails in the classic cocktail oeuvre.
Although most people consider Corpse Reviver #2 easier to drink on a long night, the classic Corpse Reviver or Corpse Reviver #1 has an aura of its own unlike anything else you have ever tasted. They are both classic drinks and every bar in town should know how to serve a great one!
What goes into a Corpse Reviver 2
These ingredients should be super easy to get, even the absinthe!
- Gin: Gin is the base spirit. I prefer a London Dry Gin, but feel free to use any one you like.
- Lillet Blanc: The original recipe called for Kina Lillet which no longer exists. Lillet Blanc is a French aperitif that can be drunk on its own or in a cocktail.
- Orange Liqueur: This give is its sweetness. You can use Triple Sec, Cointreau or Grand Marnier. Try each and taste which is your favorite.
- Absinthe: No longer illegal to sell, you can find them everywhere now.
- Fresh Lemon Juice: A little lemon juice provides a bite!
What tools you need to make Corpse Reviver 2
You’ll need a cocktail shaker for this one! Grab a jigger, a barspoon, a strainer, and a coupe glass for this Corpse Reviver No 2 recipe.
- Step 1: Add a few dashes absinthe into the chilled coupe and rinse the inside of the glass with it.
- Step 2: Throw the excess over your shoulder
- Step 3: Add equal parts gin, Lillet Blanc, orange liqueur and lemon juice to a shaker
- Step 4: Add Ice
- Step 5: Shake, shake, shake
- Step 6: Strain the drink into a child cocktail glass
- Step 7: Garnish with an orange twist or a lemon twist. Bottom’s up!
- 🍸Top Tip(le): You can always add or change a few ingredients to the original cocktail to make it your own Corpse Reviver!
- Dry vermouth: You can replace Lillet Blanc with dry vermouth, like Cocchi Americano. It has a crisp flavor with minimum sweetness.
- Lime Juice: Adding a dash of lime juice zings it up a bit.
