Trying to teach you how to make a Rum Old Fashioned is like asking how long a piece of string is. There are so many types of rum and so there are so many types of Rum Old Fashioneds!

What ingredients do you need for the Rum Old Fashioned

Have a few different types of rums on hand: aged rum, dark rum, white rum. Aged rum gives it more of a whisky feel like a classic old fashioned, since the rum was aged in oak barrels. Dark rum adds depth, but if all you have is white rum, try it!

I also suggest having a few types of bitters as well, such as orange bitters and Angostura bitters. Depending on the flavor profiles you are looking for, try our a few different dashes of bitters.

If you love to stir, then have a demerara sugar cube or brown sugar cube on hand, or both simple syrup or demerara syrup can do as well.

For garnish, you might want to add a maraschino cherry and an orange peel or orange twist or even one of two orange wedges!

You may see allspice dram on a few recipes. This is a liqueur made out of allspice berries and it gives a nice wintery feel to the classic rum old fashioned cocktail recipe.

Of course you need ice and a large ice cube is really chic if you can make it!

What tools you need to make the Rum Old Fashioned

You won’t be needing a cocktail shaker for this one! Grab a jigger, a mixing glass, barspoon, strainer, and a rocks glass, like any old fashioned recipe!

You’ll need to stir this one quite a bit, especially if you are using a sugar cube. You need to stir until the sugar dissolves that’s why most people choose to make it with sugar syrup.
