Mojito 1

So do we have Francis Drake to thank for the invention of the Mojito or the native South Americans? The story is that his sailor’s had been stricken with scurvy and he went off into the woods and come back with mint, lime, sugar and aguardiente. It took on the moniker El Draque. after Drake himself and was thought to cure all sorts of illnesses. When Bacardi entered the picture, the recipe was changed and out went aguardiente and in came rum!

I don’t really care if it was originally a cure for a few sailors’ scurvy or a cocktail invented at Havana’s famous bar, La Bodeguita del Medio – another invention story. I just know the classic Mojito is a fabulous drink!

What goes into a Mojito?

  • White rum: The main ingredient in the traditional recipe is the white rum. You can use any of your favorite brands for this recipe or stick to the classic Bacardi superior rum.
  • Sugar: Adding white sugar or simple syrup, demerara or turbinado sugar for a richer flavor and will add sweetness to this cocktail.
  • Fresh Mint leaves: You can’t have a Mojito without fresh mint!
  • Fresh Lime Juice: Lime juice not only adds a citrusy flavor to this cocktail but also brings in a slight sweetness.
  • Sparkling Water: Add sparkling water or club soda for fizz.
  • Garnish: Mint sprig and lime wedges are a perfect garnish for this classic cocktail.

What tools you need to make Mojito

You won’t be needing a cocktail shaker for this one! Grab a jigger, a bar spoon, and a tall glass or collins glass for this Mojito cocktail recipe. It’s super easy for the home bartenders.

Add sugar and lime juice to a glass. Next, add fresh mint leaves into the glass. Using a muddler, muddle the ingredients gently to extract the essence of mint. Add ice cubes or crushed ice to the glass. Then, pour white rum into the glass and top it with sparkling water. Throw a few lime wedges into the glass and garnish it with a fresh mint sprig. Bottom’s up!

  • 🍸Top Tip(le): There are so many amazing variations of the classic mojito cocktail. You can try them and see which one you love the best:
    • Pineapple juice: You can add pineapple juice to this recipe for a tropical flavor.
    • Berry mojito: You can either use fresh blackberries, raspberries, or blueberries or add their juices to the drink to bring in a berry-luscious flavor. You can also get creative and mix different berries to get the most of them.
    • Ginger: Add ginger ale or ginger syrup to your classic Mojito recipe. It pairs very well with the mint flavor and lime juice.
    • Iced Tea Mojito: Add a few tea bags into the drink to infuse the flavors. Iced tea is a delicious summer treat. You can use black tea bags, green tea bags, or peach-flavored tea for this recipe as well.
    • Moscato mojito: Moscato is a wine that comes from Muscat grapes. The flavor resembles orange and peaches and is very light and tasteful. You can add Moscato wine instead of white rum and enjoy a unique blend of flavors.
