How to Make the Green Tea Shot

Don’t be fooled by the name, the classic Green Tea Shot actually contains no actual green tea! However, it does contain Jameson Irish whiskey making it one of the most popular shots out there.

Green Tea Shot

Why all the confusion between the name and the ingredients? The story is that the first time everything was combined, the shooter looked like green tea, thanks to its green color. The name stuck and it’s been called that every since.

What the classic green tea shot does have is the aforementioned Jameson Irish Whisky, peach schnapps and sour mix, plus a splash of lemon-lime soda. (FYI it is an alcoholic drink!)

As you can imagine, it’s best shot for St. Patrick’s Day. It’s one of the better tasting shooters with a bit of sweetness. With its two liquors it is one of the strongest shots as well and can give a powerful kick and a great way to start the good night ahead!

What is Jameson Irish Whiskey

Founded in 1780 and still one of the most famous whiskeys in the world, not just Ireland, simply put, Jameson is a blended Irish whiskey. This means it’s made from a blend of both malted and unmalted barley, plus column still and pot still whiskey. Everything is sourced from Ireland, more specifically near Cork, where the distillery lies.

Fun fact: according to Wikipedia: John Jameson, the founder, was also the great grandfather of inventor Guglielmo Marconi, inventor of the radio!

What tools you need to make the Green Tea Shot

Grab that cocktail shaker or a mason jar and loads of ice cubes for this one! You’ll also need a jigger, strainer, and shot glasses for this cocktail recipe.

I confess the cocktail recipe calls for sour mix for this, both for convenience and just to get that sweet tart taste I am looking for! If it is too sour for you and you prefer sweet drinks, you can always add a little simple syrup or add a touch of lime juice or lemon juice for a bit of fresh citrus.

The combination of ingredients is very specific if you want to achieve that green hue. You need Jameson Irish Whiskey, any brand of peach schnapps or peach liqueur, and any brand of sour mix you like.

  • Top Tip(ple)🍸:
    • You make this more of a cocktail by adding in a splash of sprite!
    • Try seeping in green tea leaves to make Jameson green tea and get real green tea flavor
    • Seeping in peach oolong tea will give it a smoky quality
    • If you are in the United States and love your American whiskey or Japan and love your Japanese Whiskey, replace the Jameson with what you want.
    • You can make this into a toddy by adding hot water and serving it in a mug
    • Muddle a few apple slices or peach slice to get a fruity flavor
    • If you are looking a drink recipe with the health benefits of green tea, then steep some matcha green tea or any of the Chinese green tea bags in hot water or cold water and drink it!!
