St-Rémy Brandy has released its newest expression, ‘Finished in Calvados Casks’, as part of its Cask Finish Collection. It’s a limited edition from the world’s number one French brandy, so you don’t want to miss it!
Master Blender Cécile Roudaut always knew she wanted to do an expression in Calvados casks. Her instincts were spot on. Apple and St-Rémy would prove to be a match made in heaven, well actually a match made at the Chateau du Breuil, the distinguished Calvados producer whose home is right outside of Deauville in Normandy.
Normandy, France, stands as the quintessential home of apples. Nestled in this gorgeous region, apple orchards have flourished here for centuries.
St-Rémy History
St-Rémy Brandy has a rich history dating back to 1886 when Paul-Emile Rémy Martin founded the distillery.
Since the 1980s, St-Rémy has begun innovating and creating new expressions, such as the Napoleon VSOP, their XO and more recently in 2020, the St-Rémy Signature. The first of St-Rémy’s Cask Finish Collection was launched in 2018 with brandy finished in Chardonnay casks.
Since that original release, St-Rémy Finish Collection has released a limited-edition every year with finishes in Sauternes, Port, Sherry, Rum, Cabernet Sauvignon and Islay Scotch casks. The Calvados is the last in the series.
Chateau du Breuil history
Since its launch in 1954, the Chateau di Breuil had been producing Calvados in the tiny town of Le Breuil en Auge from their over 42 hectares of 22,000 apple trees. The juice is pressed, fermented, and then distilled under the watchful eye of Philippe Etignard, Master Blender for Château du Breuil.
When it came time to picking a Calvados parter, It took only one meeting to convince Cécile that Chateau di Breuil was perfect for St-Rémy.
Brandy and Calvados Meet
St-Rémy XO brandy is transferred to Calvados casks for their final finishing period, resulting in a blissful marriage of the two!
As a lover of both brandy and Calvados, I couldn’t wait to try the St-Rémy finished in Calvados Casks. I can assure you it’s going to be very popular with enthusiasts of both.
The golden liquid of St.Rémy XO brandy emerges with a nose full of apples, plus some vanilla and spices! On the palate, the apple notes are followed by even more spice and a finish that is a wonderful combination of the two.
