The Martinez sits right at the crossroads of cocktail history. Often called the missing link between the Manhattan and the Martini, it is richer, softer, and a little more indulgent than the drinks that followed. If you like your cocktails stirred, aromatic, and just slightly sweet, this is one to know.
It dates back to the late 1800s, when bartenders were still experimenting with vermouth and gin. Back then, gin was sweeter and more botanical, which explains why the Martinez leans in that direction. Today, it feels like a welcome throwback. Elegant, balanced, and just different enough to stand out.
Variations
- A more classic version uses Old Tom gin, which brings a softer, slightly sweeter profile closer to the original style
- For a drier take, reduce the maraschino slightly and increase the gin
- Some recipes swap Angostura for orange bitters, which brightens the drink and leans it closer to a Martini
Why Lush Life Loves It
This is a cocktail with personality. The combination of gin, sweet vermouth, and maraschino liqueur gives it depth without heaviness. It is the kind of drink you sip slowly, preferably before dinner, when you have time to appreciate it.
It also feels like a bit of insider knowledge. Everyone knows a Martini, but a Martinez signals you know your way around a bar.
