How to Make the Hurricane

The Hurricane was created in New Orleans during the 1940s at Pat O’Brien’s, at a time when bars were encouraged to use up surplus rum. It quickly became associated with the city’s drinking culture and remains one of its most recognisable cocktails. The name comes from the curved glass it is traditionally served in.

Built around rum and tropical fruit, it is bold, sweet, and designed to be generous rather than restrained. Passion fruit is the key to giving it structure, cutting through the sweetness and keeping it from feeling flat. When balanced properly, it is much more than just a tourist drink.

Why Lush Life Loves It

I tend to avoid this when it is overly sweet, which it often is. When it is done properly, though, it has real character and feels true to its origins. It is one of those drinks that rewards a bit of care.
