Caorunn Gin had me at the botancials: Cold Blush Apples, Heather, Bog Myrtle, Rowan Berry and Dandelion Leaf. These combined with the more familiar botanicals we’re used to and you have one Scottish gin.
It’s possibly the least smoky spirit in Speyside, even though it’s distilled in a whisky distillery, Balmenach to be exact. If you are up on your Gaelic, you know that Caorunn is the translation of one of its botanicals, the Rowan Berry.
Along with the aforementioned Cold Blush Apples, Heather, Bog Myrtle, and Dandelion Leaf, Rowan Berry can be found close to the distillery and is added to the more traditional botanicals such as juniper, lemon peel, orange peel, angelica root and cassia back to make a wonderful small batch Scottish wonder.
How is Caorunn Gin made
Caorunn Gin is actually distilled in a Copper Berry Chamber. They begin with a wheat grain neutral spirit and then the distilling and diffusing begins until it is bottled at 41.8% ABV!
I had no idea what this was before writing about Caorunn Gin. The Copper Berry Chamber extracts “essential oils as a base to create perfumes.” So does this mean the gin tastes, or even smells, different than other gins? You’ll have to try to for yourself!
How does Caorunn Gin taste
- Color: Clear
- Nose: I really want to smell all those lovely local botanicals and I think that the apple and the heather are right there along with the Juniper!
- Taste: Although juniper forward, there is a distinct flavor of Speyside lingering in the background. I don’t know exactly what Rowan Berry and Bog Myryle are but I am sure I taste them!
- Finish: A slight juniper on the back of the throat, but super smooth
- Alcohol: 41.8% ABV
