Originating in Italy during the 1860s, the Americano cocktail gained popularity among American tourists, hence its name.
The Americano is composed of equal parts Campari and sweet vermouth, topped with a splash of soda water. It’s typically served over ice in a highball glass and garnished with a twist of lemon or an orange slice, which adds a tangy citrus element to its mostly bittersweet flavor profile.
Campari, a bitter Italian liqueur, brings a bold and slightly herbal bitterness to the drink, while the sweet vermouth adds a layer of sweetness and depth. The soda water lightens the cocktail, making it the perfect choice for any time of day. With it being low ABV, the Americano is great for anytime of day!

The Americano pre-dates the Negroni! A favorite of Americans at Gaspare Campari’s bar in Milan, Italy in the 1860s, the Americano was slightly tweaked by the infamous Count Negroni to make his eponymous cocktail. No gin = Americano!
