Meet the Hannibal Lecter cocktail, a Silence of the Lambs inspired Halloween drink that pairs Chianti with Polish rye vodka, sweet vermouth and pomegranate juice. It is ruby red, wonderfully easy to make, and I am completely smitten with it.

The Silence of the Lambs Inspiration
Sobieski, the Polish vodka made from 100% rye, created three horror movie cocktails for Halloween, with the brand’s mixologist Ryan Way drawing on IT, Candyman and The Silence of the Lambs. This is the Silence of the Lambs serve, and it is a nod to Hannibal Lecter’s most famous line, the one about fava beans and “a nice Chianti.” The wine is the star of the glass, and I love that.
Why Chianti Works So Well Here
Chianti is a Tuscan red made mainly from Sangiovese grapes, and it is loved for its bright acidity and juicy red fruit. Both qualities are exactly what this drink needs. The acidity keeps the sweet vermouth and pomegranate juice lively, the red fruit echoes the pomegranate, and the silky, smooth Sobieski rye adds backbone without crowding anyone out. A fruity, everyday Chianti is ideal, so there is no need to open a special bottle.
Variations
- Another red: Any fruity, medium-bodied red wine works if Chianti is not on hand. Keep it light on oak so the pomegranate shines.
- For a crowd: Every ingredient is 25 ml, so the recipe scales up in equal parts for a party.
- Bring on the orange: A long, wide orange peel adds fragrance with every sip, so be generous with it.
Serving Notes
Serve it in a wine glass over ice, just as pictured, as a welcome drink for a Halloween dinner or a Silence of the Lambs movie night. It pairs beautifully with salty, savory nibbles like prosciutto, aged Parmesan and olives.
