How to Find the Perfect Non-Alcoholic Spirits for Christmas
Non-alcoholic spirits are not longer a trend. They sit along side their boozy buddies in drinking establishments everywhere. Thanks to Ben Branson, the genius behind Seedlip, who single-handedly created the category, there is a huge range of non-alcoholic spirits on the market to gift the alcohol-free ones in your circle.
I have put together a list of my favorite of these non-alcoholic spirits, as well as links to the Christmas cocktails you can serve with them. Hopefully, they will make your holiday spirit a little brighter this season.
I would be remiss to begin any non-alcoholic spirit list without including one from Seedlip. Their NOgroni cocktail is now a modern classic on any cocktail list. Now to make super easy for all of us, they've put together a NOgroni recipe kit, including all the ingredients to make it properly!
Gordon’s has launched its new alcohol free spirit!! Amazing!! It's made using only the finest distilled botanicals and promises to provide the bold, juniper-led character you know!
Pentire would definitely have been the spirit of choice for the residents of Tintagel! Born on the craggy Cornwall coast, Pentire uses only sustainably sourced or organically grown botanicals, including rock samphire, sea fennel, sage, citrus and Cornish sea salt. A slight hint of mint on the palate makes it perfect for the holiday season. Try it with Tongue in Peat below for a great Virgin Mary!
Made on the Devon coast with a hint of Juniper, Sea Arch is my go to when I want a Sea and T (Love that!). All you need is tonic and a squeeze of lemon! They have just started to produce their own canned Sea & Ts and Rose Sea & T, making it even easier for you!
How to describe the trifecta known as Three Spirit? They were created by "botanical alchemists" using plant-based ingredients including ones with crazy names like lion's mane and yerba mate. They are rumored to give you a "synergistic experience" akin to the buzz you get with alcohol, but with no hangover as they are completely alcohol-free! I have some great recipes for them, including a take on the Negroni and Espresso Martini.
The newest alcohol free spirit on the list and one that makes a killer Mulled wine-less wine is Wilfred's. Think Campari without the alcohol! You can really taste the bitter orange, rosemary, rhubarb and clove - perfect for Christmas!
When a world-famous bartender creates a non-alcoholic spirit, the world sits up and takes notice. Award-winning Simone Caporale, formally of The Artesian in London, created ZEO to mimic the flavor and mouthfeel of alcohol. Once you've had the ZEO Dry martini or the ZEO Old Fashioned, you will be blown away!
If ginger is your thing then you need Mother Root Ginger Switchel! It's 100% all natural and totally non-alcoholic. It's an aperitif made with only pressed ginger juice, blossom honey, Organic apple cider vinegar and a hint of chilli. Add it to tonic or anything you like to drink and it gives it that zing of flavor you love if you love ginger!
Not a spirit per se, Tongue in Peat is a fabulous one-of-a-kind mixer that makes your Virgin mary's pop! Right out of Scotland, this Tomato juice is infused with peat smoke from the rugged Island of Islay to give a richer, deeper taste, naturally.
Have a great time trying them all and happy December!!
