How to Make the Corpse Reviver No. 1

Brandy, apple brandy, and sweet vermouth, stirred cold and served short. The Corpse Reviver No. 1 has a name that sounds like a dare and a flavor that is pure comfort: baked apple, dried fruit, warm spice, and a gentle bitter edge. It is a stirred drink for people who like their cocktails serious but not stern.

Corpse Reviver

A Little History

Corpse Revivers were a whole category of morning-after pick-me-ups in the early 20th century, and the best-known recipes come from Harry Craddock’s 1930 Savoy Cocktail Book, compiled at the American Bar of London’s Savoy Hotel. Craddock’s advice was to drink one before 11 a.m., which tells you everything about the intent.

The No. 1 is the brandy-based one. Its better-known sibling, the Corpse Reviver No. 2, swaps in gin, citrus, and a rinse of absinthe. If you enjoy the classic stirred tradition, my guide to the best classic cocktails is a good next stop.

Tips

Choose a good cognac. A VS or VSOP works beautifully. You want warmth and fruit, not a showpiece bottle.

Use real apple brandy. Calvados is the classic choice. American apple brandy gives a slightly bolder, more rustic drink.

Mind the vermouth. Fresh, refrigerated sweet vermouth makes a big difference. An old, oxidized bottle will flatten the whole glass.

Stir, don’t shake. All three ingredients are spirit-based, so stir for a silky texture and proper dilution.

Variations

Angostura boost. Add two dashes of aromatic bitters for extra spice.

Rye lift. Swap a quarter ounce of the cognac for rye whiskey for a drier, peppery edge.

A lighter touch. Use a lighter vermouth such as a blanc for a paler, more floral drink.

The other Corpse Reviver. Fans of citrus and gin should try the #2, which is a very different drink with the same dramatic name.

The Verdict

Rich, fruity, and quietly complex. It is a classic that feels made for autumn, and it asks very little of you except a good chair.

Why Lush Life Loves It

Some drinks announce themselves. This one settles in. The apple brandy brings orchard fruit, the cognac brings depth, and the vermouth ties them together with a spiced, herbal sweetness. It is a nightcap and an aperitif at once, and it carries a cheeky bit of Savoy history in every sip. Wonderful stuff.
