While you are sipping an Old-Fashioned, did you ever stop to consider how the combination of bourbon, sugar and bitters came to be? Stop no longer, I have the answer for you, or one answer, for as David Wondrich, the award winning cocktail writer says “Anyone who hooks his cart to any cocktail history is going to go off road!” I truly want to believe that the Old-Fashioned was created for Colonel James E. Pepper, the owner of the largest bourbon distillery in the world at one point, by the barman at his private club in downtown Louisville. So that’s where we are starting!
First we head to The Pendennis Club to meet James Gerhardt, the General Manager, then down to Whiskey Row to join Holly Mcknight who explains how Old Forester fits into the puzzle, and then lastly to meet George Harrison who introduces us to Evan Williams, who might have started all this madness over bourbon in the first place.
The Pendennis Club generously shared the recipe for their Old Fashioned and Old Forester gave us their Mint Julep recipe – so simple and so easy to enjoy at home and at the races!
