Lush Guide to Daddy Rack Tennessee Straight Whiskey

There’s a new kid in town and he’s getting noticed. Daddy Rack Tennessee Straight Whiskey launched in the USA last year and grew to be one of the most successful whiskey launches of the year. Now it’s venturing across the pond to the UK.

Daddy Rack on the street

Master Blender, James Rackham,  the Daddy of Daddy Rack, turned his sights on Tennessee and hasn’t looked back. Using his 30 years of experience, he has created an original Tennessee Straight Whiskey. I was one of the lucky few to be invited to taste Daddy Rack with the man himself. When asked why he wanted to make a Tennessee Whiskey, he told me straight up that he wanted no compromise and only do what’s the best! You can’t argue with that.

What is Daddy Rack Tennessee Straight Whiskey

The first thing to know about Daddy Rack is that it is a Tennessee Straight Whiskey which means it must be made in the US State of Tennessee. It is also required to contain at least 51% corn, like Bourbon. The difference between Bourbon and Tennessee Straight Whiskey is that it must also go through the Lincoln County process, which filters the spirit through charcoal before putting it in barrels.

How is Daddy Rack Tennessee Straight Whiskey made

Daddy Rack is lovingly made and as James says it’s “about the people as much as the product.” The corn is locally sourced from farms within 50 miles of the distillery. As you can see on the label, Daddy Rack is made with 80% corn and is milled with 10% rye, and 10% malted barley.

After distillation, then it’s time for that new make spirit to be put through the famed Lincoln County process. Daddy Rack has chosen Maple Charcoal to filter his whiskey through and, after filtration, the newly charred American Oak Barrels are ready to be filled and begins its journey.

How does Daddy Rack Tennessee Straight Whiskey taste

The label on my bottle say its Batch 001 – DR – which makes me very excited. Does this mean it’s the very first one!? I think it does.

  • Color: A light amber hue
  • Nose: Right away I smell that mix of honey and banana which I love in a Tennessee Whiskey and Bourbon. Although being in barrels for three years, I smell almost no oak.
  • Taste: Oak welcomes me in and reminds me its there when I take my first sip. Still it’s super smooth and buttery, with the banana and toasted apple saying hello as well. The vanilla and caramel wave me goodbye.
  • Finish: I was left with a dry, warm finish. Daddy Rack suggested salted popcorn might be there upon finishing, which now that they say it, I can taste!
  • Alcohol: 40% – 70cl
  • Cocktails or Neat – I adore the cocktails you can make with it, so that’s how I would drink it.
