The Brandy Crusta is one of the earliest known cocktails, created in New Orleans in the 1850s. It helped shape what we now think of as a proper cocktail, introducing citrus and liqueur into the mix.

Made with brandy, orange liqueur, lemon, and bitters, it is both structured and decorative, often served with a sugared rim and citrus peel. It sits somewhere between a sour and a more spirit forward drink. It is a cocktail with real historical weight.
Why Lush Life Loves It
I love how this feels like stepping back in time. It is a reminder of how much of modern cocktail culture started with drinks like this.
Here is the recipe

Brandy Crusta
A delightful combination of brandy, citrus, and sweetness, garnished with a distinctive sugared rim and a long lemon peel!
Equipment
Ingredients
- 2 ounces brandy
- ½ ounce lemon juice
- ¼ ounce orange curacao
- 1 tsp maraschino liqueur
- ⅓ ounce simple syrup
- 1 dash Angostura bitters
- Garnish: sugar rim
- Garnish: lemon twist
Instructions
Prepare the Glass
- Start by chilling your cocktail glass. You can do this by placing it in the freezer for a few minutes or by filling it with ice water while you prepare the other ingredients.
- Once the glass is chilled, remove it from the freezer or empty the ice water. Moisten the rim of the glass with a slice of lemon. Pour some sugar onto a small plate or shallow dish, then gently roll the moistened rim of the glass in the sugar until it is evenly coated. Set the glass aside.
Step 2: Prepare the Lemon Peel
- Using a paring knife or vegetable peeler, cut a long, continuous peel from the lemon. The peel should be as wide as possible and long enough to line the inside of your glass. Carefully remove any excess pith from the peel to avoid bitterness.
Step 3: Mix the Cocktail
- In a cocktail shaker, combine the brandy, fresh lemon juice, maraschino liqueur, curaçao, simple syrup, and a dash of Angostura bitters.
- Fill the shaker with ice to chill the mixture and dilute it slightly for the perfect balance.
- Secure the lid on the shaker and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds. The shaker should be cold to the touch
- Using a strainer, pour the mixed cocktail into your prepared glass.
- Carefully place the long lemon peel inside the glass, curling it around the inside. This adds a visual appeal and imparts a subtle citrus aroma to the drink.
