The Americano dates back to the nineteenth century and was originally known as the Milano Torino, named for its key ingredients. It later became popular with American tourists, which is how it got its current name.

Made with Campari, sweet vermouth, and soda, it is low in alcohol but full of flavour. It is bitter, refreshing, and easy to drink. It is also considered a precursor to the Negroni.

Americano
The Americano pre-dates the Negroni! A favorite of Americans at Gaspare Campari’s bar in Milan, Italy in the 1860s, the Americano was slightly tweaked by the infamous Count Negroni to make his eponymous cocktail. No gin = Americano!
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 ounces Campari
- 1 1/2 ounces Sweet Vermouth
- Club soda
- Garnish: Orange slice
Instructions
- Add the Campari and Sweet Vermouth to a highball filled with ice
- Top with club soda and stir gently
- Garnish with an orange slice
