Ingredients

  • 2 ounces bourbon or rye whiskey
  • ¼ oz cherry syrup (the syrup from a jar of good cocktail cherries works well)
  • 2 dashes Angostura Bitters
  • 1 dash orange bitters
  • Garnish: orange peel & cocktail cherry

To Finish (Smoke Options)

  • Smoking gun with oak or applewood chips
  • Wood chips, cedar, or a rosemary sprig, for smoking

Instructions

Smoke the glass

  • Place a rocks glass upside down over a small piece of smoldering wood, or use a handheld smoker to fill the glass with smoke and cover it. Let it sit for about 30 seconds. Cherry wood chips are a lovely thematic match.

Build the drink.

  • In a mixing glass filled with ice, combine the bourbon, cherry syrup, and both bitters.
  • Stir until thoroughly chilled and properly diluted (about 20–25 seconds).

Serve

  • Turn the glass upright and release the smoke.
  • Add a large ice cube, then strain the drink over it.
  • Express the orange peel over the surface, rub it around the rim, and drop it in.
  • Finish with the cherry.
