- 1 bottle red wine (see the picks above)
- 2-3 cinnamon sticks
- 4-6 whole cloves
- 1-2 star anise
- 1 orange, sliced
- ¼ cup brown sugar or honey
- ¼ cup brandy (optional)
Combine the wine, spices, orange slices and sugar in a large pot.
Set it over medium heat and bring it to a bare simmer, with just a few small bubbles at the edges.
Reduce to low heat and warm gently for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
Stir in the brandy, if using, and taste.
Add a little more sugar if you like it sweeter.
Strain if you like, then ladle into mugs with a fresh slice of orange.
Notes
- Never let it boil. A hard boil cooks off the alcohol and flattens the flavor, which ties into the 20 minute rule in the FAQ.
- Leave the spices in the pot for a stronger, spicier mug, or strain them out for a cleaner pour.
