This Rye Cocktail With Two Vermouths Beats a Classic Manhattan

The Perfect Manhattan is the classic Manhattan’s brighter, silkier sibling, made by splitting the vermouth between sweet and dry. That one small swap gives you a whiskey cocktail with more lift, more aroma, and a gorgeous glow in the glass.

What Makes a Manhattan “Perfect”?

In cocktail language, “perfect” means equal parts sweet and dry vermouth. The idea goes back to the days before Prohibition, when drinks were often ordered sweet, dry, or somewhere in the middle. That middle path became the Perfect Manhattan, and it was inspired by an older gin cocktail that used both vermouths too. The result has all the warmth of a Manhattan with a fresh, fragrant lift on top.

Perfect, Classic, and Dry Manhattans

Here is how the three compare:

  • Classic Manhattan: whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters. Rich, round, and a little sweeter. Our Maker’s Mark Manhattan is a lovely example.
  • Perfect Manhattan: sweet and dry vermouth in equal parts. Balanced, aromatic, and a touch lighter.
  • Dry Manhattan: dry vermouth only. Crisp, herbal, and the leanest of the three.

If you love a Manhattan but want a little less sweetness, the Perfect is the one to try.

Rye or Bourbon?

Both are wonderful! Rye brings peppery spice and a drier finish, which is why it is the traditional choice. Bourbon is rounder and a bit sweeter, so it makes a cozier, more velvety drink. Canadian whisky gives a softer, smoother Perfect Manhattan too, and a swap to Scotch turns it into a Rob Roy, the Manhattan’s Scottish cousin. The recipe card below works with rye or bourbon, so pick whichever matches your mood.

Choosing Your Vermouth

Vermouth is half of the story here, so it is worth choosing well. For the sweet half, look for something rich and full of spice, like Carpano Antica Formula, which is beloved for its vanilla depth. For the dry half, Dolin or Noilly Prat bring a crisp, herbal brightness that sparkles next to the whiskey. Vermouth is fortified wine, so it likes to live in the refrigerator once opened, and it tastes best within a month or two. Fresh vermouth makes a real difference in the glass.

Angostura bitters are the classic finish, and a dash of orange bitters adds a pretty little spark of citrus.

Stir, Strain, and Serve

A Perfect Manhattan is a stirred drink. Stirring keeps it clear, silky, and ice cold without the cloudiness that shaking brings. Serve it in a chilled coupe, or a Nick and Nora if you have one. A lemon twist adds brightness and a cherry adds richness, so you can garnish to match your mood.

Perfect Manhattan FAQ

Can you make a Manhattan with dry vermouth? Yes! A Dry Manhattan uses only dry vermouth for a crisp, herbal drink. A Perfect Manhattan uses both, so you keep some of the sweet vermouth’s richness.

Is a Perfect Manhattan sweeter than a classic Manhattan? It is a little less sweet, because half of the sweet vermouth is replaced with dry.

Should I stir or shake a Perfect Manhattan? Stir. It gives you a smooth, silky texture and a crystal clear drink.

Which whiskey is best for a Perfect Manhattan? Rye for spice and a drier finish, bourbon for a rounder, sweeter sip. Both are delicious.
